James Nachtwey ist der berühmteste Kriegsfotograf unserer Zeit. Seit fast
20 Jahren fotografiert er in Krisengebieten dieser Welt - Afghanistan und
Bosnien, Ruanda und El Salvador, Nordirland und Kurdistan, Somalia und
Südafrika. Dabei entstanden Dokumente dessen, wozu Menschen auch am Ende
des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts noch fähig sind: Bilder von apokalyptischem
Leiden, archaischem Hass, kollektivem Blutrausch.
James Nachtwey wurde 1948 im US-Bundesstaat Massachusetts geboren. Er
besuchte Dartmouth College, eine der angesehensten Hochschulen der USA.
Dort studierte er Kunstgeschichte und Politikwissenschaften und beschloss,
Fotograf zu werden. Nach dem Ende seines Studiums jobbte Nachtwey zunächst
auf Handelsschiffen und als Lastwagenfahrer, dann als Assistent eines
Nachrichten-Redakteurs bei der US-Fernseh-Gesellschaft NBC in New York.
1976 begann er als Lokalfotograf in Neu Mexiko zu arbeiten, ab 1980 als
freier Fotograf in New York.
1981 fuhr Nachtwey nach Nordirland, um die Unruhen vor allem in Belfast
festzuhalten. Das wurde der Beginn seiner internationalen Karriere als
Fotograf sozialer und vor allem kriegerischer Konflikte. Seither hat er in
den achtziger Jahren vor allem in den lateinamerikanischen Bürgerkriegen
fotografiert, hat den Nahost-Konflikt im Libanon, in Israel und den
besetzten Gebieten porträtiert, hat sich auf den Kriegsschauplätzen
Afrikas aufgehalten. Viele Monate verbrachte er in Südafrika, um das Ende
der Apartheid zu dokumentieren. Immer wieder zog es ihn zu den Konflikten
auf dem Gebiet der ehemaligen Sowjetunion, nach Bosnien,
Rumänien,Tschetschenien. Bei verschiedenen Besuchen in Afghanistan
entstand 1996 eine große Bilddokumentation des dortigen Krieges.
"Was ich festhalte", sagt Nachtwey, "wird Teil des ewigen Archivs unseres
kollektiven Gedächtnisses sein. Und ich weiß, dass Fotos Verantwortliche
zum Handeln zwingen können. Ohne die Bilder von Bürgerkrieg und Hunger in
Somalia wäre niemand dort eingeschritten. Ohne die Fotos aus Bosnien wäre
der Krieg vielleicht noch immer nicht beendet."
Von 1986 bis 2001 ist James Nachtwey Mitglied der Foto-Agentur »Magnum«.
Sein Werk ist vielfach ausgestellt und ausgezeichnet worden. So erhielt
Nachtwey bisher zweimal den World Press Preis, fünfmal die Robert Capa
Medaille, dreimal den Infinity Award des International Center of
Photography in New York. Nachtwey war sechsmal Magazin-Fotograf des Jahres
in den USA und erhielt das Eugene-Smith-Gedächtnis-Stipendium

E’ cresciuto in Massachusetts e si è laureato al Dartmouth College, dove
ha studiato Storia dell’Arte e Scienze Politiche (1966-70). La scelta di
diventare fotoreporter è stata fortemente influenzata dalle immagini della
Guerra in Vietnam e dal Movimento per i Diritti Civili in America. Ha
lavorato a bordo delle navi della Marina Mercantile, come apprendista
capocronista e camionista, e al contempo studiava fotografia da
autodidatta.
Nel 1976 ha cominciato a lavorare come fotografo di un giornale nel Nuovo
Messico. Nel 1980 si è trasferito a New York per cominciare una carriera
come fotografo freelance per un giornale. Il suo primo incarico all'estero
fu un servizio sulla lotta civile nell’Irlanda del Nord nel 1981, durante
lo sciopero della fame dell’IRA. Da allora Nachtwey si è dedicato
esclusivamente alla documentazione di guerre, conflitti e questioni
sociali. Il vasto repertorio dei suoi lavori fotografici copre un raggio
di quattro continenti.
Nachtwey è stato un fotografo di contratto con Time sin dal 1984. Ha
lavorato in associazione con la Black Star dal 1980 al 1985 ed è stato
membro della Magnum dal 1986 al 2001. E’ socio della Royal Photographic
Society e ha ricevuto un Dottorato Honoris Causa in Belle Arti dal
Massachusetts College of Arts. Nel settembre 2001 è diventato membro
fondatore dell’Agenzia Fotografica VII.
La grandezza di James Nachtwey, ciò che lo rende un autore e non un
semplice reporter di guerra è che nelle sue fotografie c'è sempre
un'attenta composizione. Forse ci si aspetta che un fotografo di fronte ai
bambini affamati o ai cadaveri decomposti, diventi incapace di svolgere il
suo lavoro, dimentico della sua professionalità, così come chiunque
sarebbe incapace di dire qualsiasi parola di fronte a scene del genere.
Invece le fotografie di Nachtwey sono sempre chiare e precise
testimonianze e l'attenzione alla composizione diventa il mezzo con cui
Nachtwey informa, comunica in modo efficace quello che ha visto, con la
partecipazione di chi assiste alla sofferenza umana e vuole combatterla.

James Nachtwey grew up in Massachusetts and graduated from Dartmouth
College, where he studied Art History and Political Science (1966-70).
Images from the Vietnam War and the American Civil Rights movement had a
powerful effect on him and were instrumental in his decision to become a
photographer. He has worked aboard ships in the Merchant Marine, and while
teaching himself photography, he was an apprentice news film editor and a
truck driver.
In 1976 he started work as a newspaper photographer in New Mexico, and in
1980, he moved to New York to begin a career as a freelance magazine
photographer. His first foreign assignment was to cover civil strife in
Northern Ireland in 1981 during the IRA hunger strike. Since then,
Nachtwey has devoted himself to documenting wars, conflicts and critical
social issues. He has worked on extensive photographic essays in El
Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza, Israel,
Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, the Philippines, South
Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda, South Africa, Russia, Bosnia, Chechnya,
Kosovo, Romania, Brazil and the United States.
Nachtwey has been a contract photographer with Time Magazine since 1984.
He was associated with Black Star from 1980 - 1985 and was a member of
Magnum from 1986 until 2001. In 2001, he became one of the founding
members of the photo agency, VII. He has had solo exhibitions at the
International Center of Photography in New York, the Bibliotheque
nationale de France in Paris, the Palazzo Esposizione in Rome, the Museum
of Photographic Arts in San Diego, Culturgest in Lisbon, El Circulo de
Bellas Artes in Madrid, Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles, the
Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, the Canon Gallery and the Nieuwe
Kerk in Amsterdam, the Carolinum in Prague,and the Hasselblad Center in
Sweden, among others.
He has received numerous honours such as the Common Wealth Award, Martin
Luther King Award, Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award, Henry Luce
Award, Robert Capa Gold Medal (five times), the World Press Photo Award
(twice), Magazine Photographer of the Year (seven times), the
International Center of Photography Infinity Award (three times), the
Leica Award (twice), the Bayeaux Award for War Correspondents (twice), the
Alfred Eisenstaedt Award, the Canon Photo essayist Award and the W. Eugene
Smith Memorial Grant in Humanistic Photography. He is a fellow of the
Royal Photographic Society and has an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from
the Massachusetts College of Arts.
